History in the Making

Danny is currently a member of The Grascals — Rounder Records’ newest recording artist and a member of Dolly Parton’s band. He is touring with both groups beginning September 2004 and continuing through the 2005 season with no current end in sight! This is Dolly’s first major nationwide tour in 15 years and Danny is an integral part of it!

  • Originally from Leitchfield, Kentucky and now living in Murfreesboro, Tennessee (has lived in the Nashville area for 22 years).
  • Started playing guitar at age 13 and began playing the mandolin when he was 20 years old.
  • Won multiple state championships on both the mandolin and guitar as a contest musician.
  • Formed the bluegrass/gospel group New Tradition and toured extensively across the U.S. playing many of the top venues, including the Grand Ole Opry. The group won the prestigious SPBGMA bluegrass band competition (as did Alison Krauss & Union Station) as well as being nominated for numerous IBMA, SPBGMA, and Dove awards.
  • New Tradition was in regular rotation on CMT and TNN with their video “Seed of Love” which was the first bluegrass video to feature the banjo (it reached #1 on TNN) as well as being guests on “Nashville Now” with Ralph Emery and “Crook & Chase”.
  • Danny is a gifted songwriter and his songs have been recorded by New Tradition and many other bluegrass and gospel artists.
  • Danny has spent many hours as a studio musician recording ten cds with New Tradition, two cds with Ronnie Reno and the Reno Tradition, and many other artists in several genres of music. He has also just completed his first solo recording, “Mandolin Orchard” (which includes Grascals’ bandmate Jimmy Mattingly) as well as a new cd with the Grascals and also Dolly Parton.
  • Besides performing with Dolly and the Grascals, Danny has shared the stage in concert and in instrumental workshops with many artists including: Marty Raybon, Ronnie Reno and the Reno Tradition, Sam Bush, Mark O’Connor, Chris Thile, Tim O’Brien, Bobby Osborne, Larry Cordle and Lonesome Standard Time, Melonie Cannon, Charlie Sizemore, Special Consensus, Sonya Isaacs, and many more.
  • Danny proudly endorses Gibson mandolins and for the past four years has spent many hours at Gibson (Original Acoustic Instrument division) as part of the team reconstructing and producing the Gibson mandolin that is once again at the forefront of the industry.
